The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has not been canceled, but an issue with timing resulted in the game being delisted from retailers.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is now being led by Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the original title. The change was announced Tuesday, on the official Prince of Persia Twitter account.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is now being led by Ubisoft Montreal, the studio behind the original title. The change was announced Tuesday, on the official Prince of Persia Twitter account.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was originally announced in September 2020 for an expected 2021 release date. The game would be delayed twice, once from January to March, and then again indefinitely.

The statement reads, in part: “This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready.”

You might remember that classic time-shifting platformer Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time is getting a fancy remake. Announced in 2020, it was originally due out in January 2021. Then it was delayed. And delayed again, as the project moved studios. Now it has been delayed once more, only this time it has been delayed straight to hell.

Over the weekend reports began surfacing that the game was being delisted from retailers, leading fans to assume that the project had been cancelled. That was both true and not quite true; while the game is indeed being delisted from retailers

That said, and I’m not telling anyone breaking news here, it doesn’t sound like the project is in great shape. Having been in development at Ubisoft’s two Indian studios for years, it was only last month that it was announced the game had been pulled from those teams and was moving to the original 2003 game’s developers, Ubisoft Montreal instead.

Announcing that move, they said the Montreal team “will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready”. Having taken a month to survey the work, things must not have been great, because Ubisoft have now told IGN over the weekend that “we are no longer targeting a FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their pre-order they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along.”

This announcement suggests that Ubisoft is placing a priority on getting the Sands of Time project back on track; Ubisoft Montreal is an experienced studio and the developer behind the original platformer.

Ubisoft has announced moving the development of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake to its Montréal, Canada studio after months without any update and inordinate delays. Ubisoft is not looking to release the game in the 2023 fiscal year. The game has been in the works at Ubisoft’s Mumbai and Pune studios since 2020.

“The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montréal, the very birth place of the epic Sands of Time trilogy,” Ubisoft said in announcement .

“This decision is an important step and the team, building on the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it’s ready.”

Earlier, retailers like GameStop and others were delisting pre-orders for the upcoming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, prompting concerns the project has been canceled. IGN can confirm that the Remake is still in development, but has been further delayed out of FY23.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was originally announced in September 2020 for an expected 2021 release date. The game would be delayed twice, once from January to March, and then again indefinitely.

Anna Koul, then producer on the Sands of Time project, said that the title would be a faithful adaptation of the 2003 action-adventure title, where the titular Prince finds himself pitted against the plans of an evil Vizier alongside Farah, a young princess. “It’s just, we have given it a good bit more flavor, more enhancement,” she said.

This announcement suggests that Ubisoft is placing a priority on getting the Sands of Time project back on track; Ubisoft Montreal is an experienced studio and the developer behind the original platformer. There still is no release date, so fans will have to wait to see more of what this remake has — and when they might get to play it.

In a statement to IGN Ubisoft says, “The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be led by Ubisoft Montreal. We’re proud of the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, and Ubisoft Montreal will benefit from their learnings as the new team will continue the work to deliver a great remake.”

Ubisoft added, “As a consequence, we are no longer targeting a FY23 release anymore and the game has been delisted. If players wish to cancel their preorder they are invited to contact their retailer. They will be updated on the project as the development is moving along.”

This is not the first time the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake has been delayed. After being announced in 2020 the remake was set to be released in 2021 before being delayed to Fiscal year 23. The project also moved development teams from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montreal.

Ubisoft has announced moving the development of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake to its Montréal, Canada studio after months without any update and inordinate delays. Outside assisting with games such as Steep and Just Dance, The Sands of Time remake was the first major title Ubisoft Mumbai and Pune studios had led development on. Ubisoft didn’t reveal what prompted it to swap studios.
